Yes, you can, but must not get paid. the work must be volunteer work only. My wife was involved in cardiology research for 3 months while on h4. She was not paid - she was just a volunteer.
I would recommend - not to get into unpaid work stuff. This is from personal experience. My wife was unpaid volunteer at Emory Cardiology research , and was being exploited - they found her to be good at work and started dumping all work to her - she was completing charts of paid employees and was working like hell because they set deadlines for her. We were furious and I pulled her out.
When she requested that they give her a recommendation letter for all the work she did - they were reluctant to do it and started yelling at her and were extremely rude so that she wont ask again - they bullied her into signing a document that would strip her name off all publications. Finally after a lot of persistence and insisting, they gave a letter of recommendation.
The reason I write this stuff is - to warn you all - do not get into this kind of stuff. The world is very exploitative and we cannot trust workplaces or people around us.
Use time on H4 for some good stuff - volunteer for IV or there are so many things you can do.

which do u think is teh preferred test for us?
Just got Letter from Buffalo Canada Consulate to provide results of this test.
Plus Looks like IELTS does not have a test location in the state I reside in.

We also need your name and phone number so that we can call you. There have been times, when core team has called members to tell them about something important. We will sometimes point out on the forum if any poster has not given us full information. It may cause embarresment to some members who are frequently posting on the forums annonymously.

If EB2 PD is 1 APR 2004 then what does the ProcessingTimeFrame Date(August 25, 2006) mean for I-485 in Texas Service Center.

If your PD is 2003 but you filed your I-485 after Aug'2006 your app will not be adjudicated.
If you filed before Aug'2006 but your PD is after Apr'2004, your app will not be adjudicated.

In murthy.com website there is the following write up to explain how priority dates are significant after i485 has been filed:

No you cant do that. One should not leave country when 485 pending. Once you laid off from sponsor you can not do counsural processing also. Travelling in AP should be for a mimimum period. It will be big mistake, if you leave country without job offer. No one knows when they issue RFE for employment verification during your 485 pending period. If you do not have job when they issue RFE, thats it. Bottomline is, it is better to be employed during 485 pending and stay in the country to reply any RFE.
Can we take vacation for 2 months when we have pending 485 and 140 approved for more than six months. I had applied for 485 and 140 when i was on h4 but have now lost that status...
I plan to be under new employer with the same job description while going on for vacation and returning back on AP.

Update : My 140 got approved on Oct 31 @ NSC after ability to pay RFE was addressed with CPA eval documentation. Thanks for all your assistance and support!
This is my GC application history
1. PD for Labor - Aug 2003
2. Labor(Regular) Application Approved - Nov 2005
3. i-140 applied in Jan 2006
4. RFE received question was for company not self, i-140 withdrawn.
5. Transferred my H1 to the companys sister concern and reapplied for i140 in June 2006.
6. Applied for i140 premium processing on June 22nd, 2007.
Current status for i-140 : Recieved and pending at Nebraska service center.
Questions
Q1. What is i-140 receipt date for premium processing. Is it the date the fed-ex package is recvd by USCIS or is it a date issued by USCIS that should reach my lawyer?
Q2. If in case the USCIS need to provide my attorney a receipt date, we have NOT received one as yet. Does that mean they have not even looked at the application as yet?
Q3. Can i apply for i485 in the worst case that i do not receive approval for i140 by Aug 17th under the concurrent filing rule.
Any assistance would be highly appreciated.

Continue with the GC..The wmployer has to pay the salry on the GC only after your I 485 is approved. Wht i think, wht you are getting now has no connection with GC,
if they are decresing your salry, inform the DOL , you will be alright if ur decreased salry is more thn wht is required by the DOL.
Contact an attorney, i am sure there is a way out.

Candidate should be physically present in USA, on the date of AP approval. Otherwise, that AP is not valid. When the candidate try to enter US, the IO will verify this information and may permit accordingly.
I-485 application considers abandoned, if a candidate leaves US without any valid Visa to re-enter. Remember, H1 / H4 cannot be stamped after I-485 approval.
